# AI visibility, explained

*Author: [Boze Bago](https://picobit.ai/en/about)*

What GEO is, how it differs from SEO, how the AI engines find their sources, and what published studies say works. No prior knowledge needed. As of September 2026.

## Terms

### AI visibility

Whether and how a company appears in AI answers when people ask about its industry: in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini and Google AI Overviews.

### Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the optimisation of content, technical signals and external authority with the aim of being mentioned, cited or recommended correctly, and more often, by generative search and answer systems. The term comes from a 2023 research paper ([Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735)). None of these measures guarantees inclusion in an AI answer. GEO has nothing to do with geography.

### AEO, LLMO, AI SEO

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO), LLM Optimization (LLMO) and AI SEO: other names for the same work.

### AI search

Search features that return a written answer instead of a list of results: Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT with web search, Perplexity, Copilot and Gemini.

### Mention, citation, recommendation

A **mention** is your name in the answer. A **citation** is a reference to your website. A **recommendation** says you are a suitable option for the question. Only the last moves buying decisions. The [visibility audit](https://picobit.ai/en/visibility-audit) reports all three separately. How we measure this in practice is described in our [measurement methodology](https://picobit.ai/en/methodology).

### Share of answers

The share of answers to a fixed set of questions in which a company appears. The metric that replaces position in this field. Only a measurement if questions, runs and engines are stated.

### Sample and spread

The same question does not get the same answer every time. So every question runs several times, in clean sessions. The spread across runs is the threshold: only a movement beyond it counts as change. How we measure this in practice is described in our [measurement methodology](https://picobit.ai/en/methodology).

### Google AI Overviews

An AI-generated summary above the search results that Google shows for selected queries, with links to its sources.

### Google AI Mode

A separate search mode in Google for more complex questions that need comparisons or several steps. Users can ask follow-up questions.

### Query fan-out

Google splits a question into several related searches across subtopics and combines the results. This allows a wider range of pages to appear as sources ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), as of 10 Dec 2025).

### Entity

A uniquely identifiable thing (such as a company, a person or a product) that search and AI systems link to properties and relationships.

### Structured data

Machine-readable information in a page's source code, usually JSON-LD using schema.org. It describes what is visible on the page. It does not guarantee a mention in AI answers.

### Crawler

A program that fetches websites. AI providers distinguish crawlers for search, for user-triggered retrieval and for model training.

### llms.txt

A proposed text file meant to give language models an overview of a website. Not an established standard; Google states explicitly that such files are not needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.

### Baseline

The first, dated measurement before any optimisation. All later results are compared against it → [measurement methodology](https://picobit.ai/en/methodology).

## GEO and SEO: what stays, what is new

- **Outcome**: SEO: a position in a list of results. GEO: a written answer in which you are mentioned, cited, recommended, or missing.
- **Metric**: SEO: rankings, impressions, clicks. GEO: share of answers to a fixed question set, with sample size and spread.
- **Repeatability**: A search position looks similar for everyone. An AI answer changes by session, engine and day. A screenshot is not evidence.
- **Technical**: Same: reachable, linked, fast pages. New: rules per AI crawler, content without JavaScript, the heading and first characters as the answer.
- **Overlap**: About two thirds of the work is clean SEO. Good SEO means you do not start from zero.

## How the AI engines find their sources

### ChatGPT

71% of AI users in Germany use ChatGPT ([Bitkom Research, n = 1,003, 2026](https://www.bitkom.org/Presse/Presseinformation/Ein-Drittel-nutzt-KI-mindestens-einmal-pro-Woche)). ChatGPT runs its own search index and often reads only the title and the area around the main heading; content that only appears through JavaScript is invisible to it ([Resoneo, 26,900 pages, July to August 2026](https://think.resoneo.com/chatgpt-retrieval/)). Search access is governed by OAI-SearchBot, not GPTBot.

### Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Both build on the Google index. Here GEO is largely good SEO. Google itself says there are no additional requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in regular Search. The two features may use different models, so they do not show the same sources ([Google Search Central](https://developers.google.com/search/docs/appearance/ai-features), as of 10 Dec 2025).

### Perplexity

Fetches sources fresh for every question and shows them visibly. In Germany 7% of AI users use it ([Bitkom Research, 2026](https://www.bitkom.org/Presse/Presseinformation/Ein-Drittel-nutzt-KI-mindestens-einmal-pro-Woche)).

### Gemini

50% of AI users in Germany use Gemini ([Bitkom Research, 2026](https://www.bitkom.org/Presse/Presseinformation/Ein-Drittel-nutzt-KI-mindestens-einmal-pro-Woche)). Gemini cites sources in 82% of its answers, around eight on average ([Muck Rack, over 25 million cited links, May 2026](https://media.muckrack.com/documents/What_Is_AI_Reading__May_2026.pdf)).

### Microsoft Copilot

43% of AI users in Germany use Copilot ([Bitkom Research, 2026](https://www.bitkom.org/Presse/Presseinformation/Ein-Drittel-nutzt-KI-mindestens-einmal-pro-Woche)). A measurement for the German market that leaves out Copilot is incomplete.

What follows for a website is covered under [technical GEO implementation](https://picobit.ai/en/technical-implementation).

## What demonstrably correlates

The research is young and mostly vendor-published. We cite only studies with a published method. Two of the four findings concern work outside your own website.

- **0.66** correlation between brand mentions on the web and visibility in Google AI Overviews. Backlinks: 0.22. (Source: [Ahrefs, 75,000 brands, May 2025 (correlation, not causation)](https://ahrefs.com/blog/ai-overview-brand-correlation/))
- **84%** of all citations in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini point to earned media: press, research, government, Wikipedia and others. (Source: [Muck Rack, over 25 million cited links, May 2026](https://media.muckrack.com/documents/What_Is_AI_Reading__May_2026.pdf))
- **53.5%** citation rate for brands with a minimal review profile. Without one: 1%. (Source: [Seer Interactive, 804,491 AI responses, 1,926 brands, March 2026](https://www.seerinteractive.com/insights/study-of-800k-ai-responses-how-reviews-shape-brand-presence-in-ai-search))
- **up to +40%** visibility from sourced statistics, quotations and citations in your own text. Keyword stuffing: worse than nothing. (Source: [Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024, 10,000 queries, 2023 conditions](https://arxiv.org/abs/2311.09735))

## Supported, unsupported

### The evidence supports

- Crawler access per bot: mechanical prerequisite
- Content without JavaScript, clear first characters: shown for ChatGPT
- Sourced figures and citations in the text: peer-reviewed
- Mentions in trade media and review platforms: strongest correlation, outside the website
- Consistent company data: plausible, cheap

### The evidence does not support

- llms.txt: called unnecessary by Google
- Schema markup as a citation lever: no effect in a controlled study
- Keyword stuffing "for the AI": counterproductive
- Mass AI-generated content: a risk
- Bought mentions: called ineffective by Google

## Signals outside your website

The strongest correlations above lie outside your own website: mentions, trade media, reviews. They are correlations, not proof of cause.

### What we do about them

- Show which third-party sources the engines cite in your category, and where you are missing
- Bring name, location and services into line across your website and the profiles you control
- Structured data that describes your company unambiguously

### What we do not do

We do not offer digital PR, reference-work entries or bought mentions. We tell you where such work would count, based on the measurement.

## Common questions

### How big is the effect?

AI assistants still account for under 2% of all desktop visits ([Datos/SparkToro, US and EU/UK, Q1 2026](https://datos.live/report/state-of-search-q1-2026/)). The effect lies mostly before the click: enquiries never made because another name came up.

### How long does it take?

Perplexity reacts in days, Google with your search visibility, ChatGPT slowest. Experience, not promises. That is why we measure trends over months.

### Should we block AI crawlers?

Decide per bot. Blocking the training crawler costs nothing in search. Blocking the search crawler makes you invisible in ChatGPT.

### How does a GEO agency differ from a monitoring tool?

A tool delivers readings and leaves the work to you. A conventional SEO agency does the work without an instrument that checks its effect on AI answers. PicoBit.AI does both and is accountable for the difference between two readings.

### How much does a measurement cost?

The Basic Check costs €950 net, one-off, and is credited against a Full Analysis. The Full Analysis across all seven AI systems starts at €3,500 net. → [Pricing](https://picobit.ai/en/visibility-audit#pricing)

### Can you guarantee that AI systems will recommend us?

No. Nobody can guarantee that. We measure where you stand today, implement the technical changes and then measure again against the baseline.

### Is PicoBit.AI related to other companies named PicoBit?

No. PicoBit.AI is a GEO and AI SEO agency for B2B companies in the DACH region, founded in 2025 by Boze Bago and based in Split, Croatia. It is not affiliated with any other company or product named PicoBit.

## Where do you stand in these answers?
