Generative Engine Optimization

GEO agency for measurable AI visibility

PicoBit AI measures how often ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot mention, cite and recommend your company. Then we do the work that can change it, and measure again.

What a GEO agency does

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the optimisation of content, technical signals and external authority with the aim of being mentioned, cited or recommended correctly, and more often, by generative search and answer systems.

A GEO agency does this work for a company. At PicoBit AI that means three steps: measure where you stand in AI answers; change the website and content in ways that can shift those answers; measure again with the same method to see whether it worked.

What PicoBit AI is not

Not a software vendor: you get no login and no dashboard, but findings, actions and implementation. And not a seller of placement promises: how a model weighs its sources is controlled by nobody but its operator.

GEO and SEO: what stays, what is new

Outcome

SEO: a position in a list of results. GEO: a written answer in which you are mentioned, cited, recommended, or missing.

Metric

SEO: rankings, impressions, clicks. GEO: share of answers to a fixed question set, with sample size and spread.

Repeatability

A search position looks similar for everyone. An AI answer changes by session, engine and day. A screenshot is not evidence.

Sources

Google's AI features build on the Google index. ChatGPT runs its own index; Perplexity fetches sources fresh for every question.

Technical

Same: reachable, linked, fast pages. New: rules per AI crawler, content without JavaScript, the heading and first characters as the answer.

Overlap

About two thirds of the work is clean SEO. Good SEO means you do not start from zero.

A good Google ranking is not enough.

The engines cite pages that rank far down in search, and open many pages not at all. Often all they read is the title and a short snippet around the main heading.

The five engines we measure

ChatGPT

71% of AI users in Germany use ChatGPT (Bitkom Research, n = 1,003, 2026). ChatGPT runs its own search index and often reads only the title and the area around the main heading; content that only appears through JavaScript is invisible to it (Resoneo, 26,900 pages, July to August 2026). Search access is governed by OAI-SearchBot, not GPTBot.

Google AI Overviews and AI Mode

Both build on the Google index. Google names no special files or markup as a prerequisite (Google Search Central, May 2026). Here GEO is largely good SEO.

Perplexity

Fetches sources fresh for every question and shows them visibly. In Germany 7% of AI users use it (Bitkom Research, 2026).

Gemini

50% of AI users in Germany use Gemini (Bitkom Research, 2026). Gemini cites sources in 82% of its answers, around eight on average (Muck Rack, over 25 million cited links, May 2026).

Microsoft Copilot

43% of AI users in Germany use Copilot (Bitkom Research, 2026). A measurement for the German market that leaves out Copilot is incomplete.

How we measure

A reading is a sample, not a single query.

  1. Fix the prompt set

The questions your buyers ask before they get in touch, in their language. Questions naming you kept apart from those that do not.

    OutputFrozen prompt set

  2. Query repeatedly

Every question runs several times across five engines, in clean sessions with no history, with a documented region.

    OutputAnswers verbatim

  3. Analyse separately

Mentions, citations and recommendations as three figures, against named competitors, with spread.

    OutputShare of answers

  4. Measure again

Same set, same method. Only a movement larger than the spread counts as change.

    OutputFollow-up with evidence labels

Audit, implementation, ongoing measurement

Each can be commissioned alone. The entry point is almost always the audit.

  • Visibility audit

Where you stand in AI answers, next to whom, with which errors.

    • Share of answers against named competitors
    • Mentions, citations and recommendations reported separately
    • Prioritised action list
    Measure AI visibility
  • Technical implementation

Your website made readable and quotable for machines.

    • Crawler access per bot
    • Content readable without JavaScript
    • Consistent company data
    Technical GEO work
  • Ongoing support

Measure, interpret, implement, report. Every month.

    • Follow-up readings against the baseline
    • Implementation, not just recommendation
    • Monitoring of false statements
    Ongoing GEO support

Signals outside your website

The strongest measured correlations lie outside your own website. Brand mentions on the web correlate far more strongly with visibility in Google AI Overviews than backlinks do: 0.66 against 0.22 (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands, May 2025). Around 84% of citations in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini point to editorial content (Muck Rack, May 2026). These are correlations, not proof of cause.

What we do about them

  • Show which third-party sources the engines cite in your category, and where you are missing
  • Bring name, location and services into line across your website and the profiles you control
  • Structured data that describes your company unambiguously

What we do not do

We do not offer digital PR, reference-work entries or bought mentions. We tell you where such work would count, based on the measurement.

Limits and uncertainty

Does GEO guarantee a mention in ChatGPT?

No. No measure guarantees inclusion in an AI answer. We guarantee a documented method, dated changes and follow-up readings that also report when nothing moved.

What is proven, and what is not?

Proven: mechanical prerequisites such as crawler access and content without JavaScript, and the value of sourced figures and citations in your own text. Mentions and reviews show strong correlations but no proof of cause. The evidence does not currently support llms.txt or schema markup as citation levers. The studies in detail: supported, unsupported.

How quickly does a change show?

Perplexity can reflect changes within days, Google's AI features follow your Google visibility, ChatGPT takes longest. Experience, not promises. That is why we measure trends over months.

What cannot be measured?

Training data, the actual questions individual users asked, and a cleanly isolated revenue contribution, because many AI visits arrive without a referrer. The report states the evidence behind every claim.

How does a GEO agency differ from a monitoring tool?

A tool delivers readings and leaves the work to you. A conventional SEO agency does the work without an instrument that checks its effect on AI answers. PicoBit AI does both and is accountable for the difference between two readings.
